General Laboratory
Information and Policies: You must be on
time for each lab meeting since the laboratories are tightly scheduled, and
there is very little free time available.
Two
lateness’s are
considered one absence. In
addition, quizzes are usually scheduled for the beginning of class. Tardiness will hurt you since the lab
will not be open at hours other than those scheduled. The lab will always meet in Room 270 of
the
Missed Lab
Experiments: If you miss a laboratory session, you
must see Dr. Lay (Rm 520, 542-1985) IN PERSON WITHIN FIVE DAYS OF
THE DATE YOU MISSED LAB to obtain an excused absence. TAs
ARE NOT PERMITTED TO EXCUSE A LABORATORY
ABSENCE. If one lab is missed
during the semester without the permission from Dr. Lay, the student will
receive a grade “WF.”
Laboratory Notebook:
Everyone is required to keep and maintain
a laboratory notebook. You must
purchase a laboratory notebook with sewn-in binding that has the ability to
make a carbon copy of each page in the book. This type of notebook is available in
the University bookstore. Loose
leaf and spiral bound notebooks are not allowed. Follow the directions given in lab on
how such a notebook should be maintained.
After each lab experiment is completed, you will be required to hand in
a carbon copy of the notes and data you obtained for that experiment. The manner in which you record data and
maintain your lab notebook will be graded.
Laboratory
Quizzes: There will be about 10 pre-lab quizzes
spaced throughout the semester. Any
information that you receive concerning a particular lab is valid material for
quizzes. This does not necessarily
mean that the quizzes will be hard or tricky, but they will be thorough. To do well on these quizzes, be sure
read and understand the experiment from your lab manual BEFORE coming to the
lab session.

Handouts: Laboratory manuals can be purchased from
the Baxter Street Bookstore (
